Claim / Loss Type Description and Action Required 
Property Claim For immediate or emergency on-site support related to a property loss (Ex: flood, fire, theft, vandalism, etc.), please contact McMaster Security Services and follow the McMaster Emergency Guide.

As soon as is practicable following the incident, report ALL claims, regardless of dollar amount, involving property loss or damage to the Chief Risk Office.

Claims may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Building or property damage due to accidents, fire, broken pipes, vandalism, or weather 
  • Missing or damaged property due to theft 

Please refer to McMaster’s Self Insurance program for information on deductibles for individual departments who experience a loss event.

Automobile Claim As soon as is practicable following the incident, report ALL automobile losses or claims, regardless of dollar amount, involving property loss or damage to the Chief Risk Office.
General Liability Claim (Lawsuit) General liability claims usually involve personal property damage, injury, or related medical expenses to third parties, such as the public, students, or visitors.  

Staff and faculty should direct individuals to the McMaster University Office of Legal Services relating to service of liability claims or to discuss potential liability claims. OLS will then contact the Chief Risk Office for insurance involvement, if applicable.

Time Sensitive: In the event that a liability claim (lawsuit) is served upon or received directly by a McMaster University staff or faculty member, immediately contact the McMaster University Office of Legal Services for direction. 

Cargo or Shipping Insurance Claim Report any cargo of shipping losses to the Chief Risk Office.
Cyber or Information Security Claim All Cyber or Information Security matters should be reported immediately to University Technology Services, as detailed in the following webpage:
