Summary of McMaster University Insurance Programs

The following are summaries of McMaster University’s insurance programs and do not include all of the conditions and exclusions that may apply to these policies. If there is a discrepancy between the summary below and the policy, the policy prevails. For further information about these policies, please contact the Chief Risk Office.

Cargo or Shipping Insurance provides coverage for property, goods or equipment while in transit between McMaster University and its destination, and for the equipment’s return transit, if applicable.  

When shipping property, goods, or equipment, it is important to understand what is covered, what exclusions may apply, and what information you need to provide to the Chief Risk Office in order to activate this insurance.   

To register for cargo or shipping insurance coverage, please contact the Chief Risk Office.

If shipping internationally, please also contact our Customs and Traffic Officer as there may be additional requirements

Special Insurance is required for the execution of clinical trials in many countries and country-specific requirements for this insurance differ greatly. It is recommended that McMaster staff and faculty contact the Chief Risk Office to discuss clinical trials insurance needs and options in the early planning stages of any trial.

McMaster University is pleased to include property and liability insurance for students living in residence. This insurance covers your personal belongings, and protects you against loss or damage that you may be liable for.

McMaster University policy RMM 801 Field Trips, Student Placements and Research Activity Planning and Approval Program details all protocols and procedures related to travel for the purpose of field trips, research activities, and placements that are McMaster sanctioned. 

Travel insurance and procedures are overseen through the University Health and Safety (UHS) office. Please visit McMaster’s Travel Safety and Planning website for important safety and insurance information for University business travel.

 

Compensation to Faculties and Departments for losses due to damage or theft of property may be eligible for reimbursement out of the University’s general funds.
